POISON IVY ANALOGY-SYNDROME
---It is my contention that we are ALL more or less in the throws of this, Poison Ivy Analogy Syndrome. Let me explain. Something we can all relate to is Poison Ivy and how it works. We come into contact with the plant and if allergic, as many of us are, we have a reaction, a breakout, that is very ''itchy.'' We are told immediately ''Not to Scratch.'' The reasoning for this is simple, if we scratch it, it spreads. No matter how much it itches, we are encouraged not to scratch. We are very contagious, and everything we touch we seem to give it to. The more we Scratch, the more it Spreads on ourselves AND others.
---Now, logically, the Human Mind says this, ''If it itches, we scratch.'' We know why this is NOT a good idea. So we ''suck'' it up, and put up with a certain amount of discomfort. I'm not going to speak of the lotions or anything, but if WE DO NOT Scratch, it ''usually'' goes away.
---There are many ways in which we are Scratching and Spreading, without even knowing it. When we continue to do anything that gives us a pleasurable sensation, to an excess, we create this syndrome. We then try to recreate a past experience and we are therefore ''Living in the Past.'' In this process, we are creating an ''Addiction.''
.
---Scratching It, Spreads It---
---The ''Eagles'' said it very well in the song ''Desperado.'' ''The things that are pleasing you, can hurt you somehow.'' This is how the Addiction is born. When we attempt to fill the ''emptiness'' within us, we can easily become dependent on the ''tool'' used. We really believe that the ''tool'' is going to ''recreate'' this situation, a pleasurable sensation, and ''we go from there.'' I think that somehow, we actually believe that, it is going to LAST, too. We ALL know that the first few times that, maybe, we come close to the first experience, but after that it is usually-All Down Hill. We become De-sensitized and we have to have ''enormous'' amounts of the same thing to recreate any ''real experience,'' AT ALL.
---''There is Nothing Good or Bad within itself, but only our Thinking that makes it so.'' Shakespeare is credited for this. This is True, and we can apply it as such-As we start thinking about doing something again and again because it was in someway ''mind-blowing,'' we are Scratching our Itch. We know from the Poison Ivy Analogy that this only Spreads it and is not the way to Stop it. Doing things Once or even ''once in awhile'' is not the problem. It is in the ''thinking'' that we can re-create a situation and then excess comes into play. We ''think'' that if we scratch the ''itch,'' [what?- enough,] it will go away. It doesn't. We lose control in the process, and become addicted. ''Everything in Moderation, Including Moderation, itself.''
---When we stay in the Middle, within our own boundaries, we have no problem. When we Excede this, we are off and running into another addiction. It doesn't have to be tobacco, alcohol, sex, food [anything we use to drug ourselves so we don't have to face-up to something] or any of the ''big'' ones. Or even ''drugs,'' themselves.
---We can be addicted to a life-style or a Mindset and Belief system that causes a short-term effect, also. We are not Free within this. We stay in our foggy old notions and concepts, where we feel safe, and don't allow our thought to ''Be Free and Go Quiet.'' When the Mind and Desire is quiet, than we can see what Love is, and Knowing Ourself becomes much easier. Being addicted to something is not an ''easy'' situation to contend with, but it ''is'' possible. Get help if you need to. It is ''worth'' being free. Be Well.
